Yum Tums

OUR STORY

I am a full time working Mom who loves to cook, bake and watch the smiles, communication and the pure enjoyment of eating home cooked fresh food.   However as a family we have on occasion feel on hard times and have struggled to maintain a good and substantial food shop on a weekly basis, and understand how hard it is week by week.

In our community families and individuals go without proper food and shelter, due to a variety of factors including low wages, job loss, injuries, illness, age, domestic violence, or divorce. While all of us are susceptible to hard times, children and the elderly are at the most risk, and they make up the largest number of clients we serve.

As you may be aware the government issue free meals to children during school time, but what happens in the weeks of the half term?  Yum Tums aims to fill this gap providing a free nutritious lunch time meal, within a warm social environment.  We would also like to provide free recipe packs to take away, to help with creating healthy cheap family meals and provides a bit of messy baking fun in the kitchen with our children.

Rev.Samuel Leach and his wife Jo from St Alban's Church have helped to set up this lunch club, providing the room, facilities, their additional support and guidance.  Their ambition to help the community and reach out further from the Church has made the process of approaching them with my suggestion very easy, they have rearranged sessions and have gone out their way to make this lunch club work.

We will be using foodshare and foodcloud to maintain regular food supplies, along with the Co-op on Ashmore Park who will also be donating food.

The club will run every half term starting in October 2017 on a Tuesday and Thursday 11.30-1pm.  It is open to everyone regardless of the circumstances. We have a mind set of a community lunch club where our children want too attend to eat and play with their friends.

We will  be providing games, crafts and various activities during the time.

This will be an unsupervised club where parents/carers are requested to stay, but rest assured there will be tea, coffee and soup available.
